Bio
Eric Hansen married his high school sweetheart and is a lifelong sports enthusiast. He loves to play golf and to watch the KU Jayhawks on the basketball court. Eric’s loyalties run deep in his professional life as well. Although he moved to the full-time practice of law after spending sixteen years as a certified public accountant (and achieving partnership status with Deloitte & Touche), Eric maintained his concentration in financial matters, with a strong background in tax, accounting, and business.
Eric brings a very personal approach to developing plans and strategies for estate, tax, and business clients. He is equally at ease when working through a small estate plan or negotiating a multi-million dollar business transaction. Eric strives to meet the client’s needs with a focus on listening and responding to the client’s goals. Offering sound legal analysis, in-depth knowledge of the law, and relevant industry experience, Eric stands as a compelling voice for both the firm and its clients.
Estate Planning and Estate Administration
Eric’s strong background is invaluable in the area of estate planning and estate administration. He is a trusted advisor to his clients, drafting documents to address their most personal needs, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and documents that bestow charitable or personal gifts with a focus on minimizing income, gift, and estate taxes. After a client’s death, Eric will compassionately and competently see the survivors through the probate and estate administration process.
Tax Law
Eric is admitted to the United States Tax Court and is a highly-respected and seasoned practitioner in that arena. He has extensive experience assisting clients who face IRS examinations or who would benefit from IRS private letter rulings. Eric assists clients – both large and small – in determining, and attaining, the corporate structure best suited for their business risk and tax needs. Because he worked as a certified public accountant before turning his attention to the practice of law, Eric understands and appreciates the tax ramifications involved in reorganizations, sales and purchases, and various types of shareholder agreements.
Succession Planning for Closely-Held Businesses
Eric understands the choices and pressures closely-held companies face. He guides clients through the maze of governmental regulations to ensure that today’s business owners are able to leave strong businesses in capable hands tomorrow. Eric assists clients in minimizing their tax liabilities. Where a sale is desirable, he helps clients determine whether a sale of assets or sale of corporate stock will best suit the company and its individual members (and importantly, he assists in that determination years in advance of the sale).
Business Law
Eric is a formidable ally to business clients of all sizes in the formation and administration of C-Corporations, S-Corporations, and limited liability companies. He offers wise counsel and years of experience in business sales and acquisitions, employment agreements, key employee noncompetition agreements, and other business transactions.
