Bio

Dick Wetzler is a native Kansan whose law practice focuses on serving the needs of both individuals and businesses in the Kansas City area. While Dick was growing up in Marysville, his father was a small business owner who also served as the county clerk and his aunt, a KU graduate, piqued his interest in higher education. Dick’s decision to pursue a legal career combined the examples of both of these role models. Dick has a longstanding commitment to philanthropic works. He co-founded Swaziland Arts for Education with his daughter, a former Peace Corps volunteer. S.A.F.E. sponsors orphans and other vulnerable youth by selling native artwork in the United States to help these children attend school.

Civil and Commercial Litigation

Dick offers almost forty years of trial experience. He represents a number of businesses and individual clients in a wide range of contested matters including employment, construction contract disputes, and the ownership and use of real property. Dick is a trusted ally and a respected adversary in the courtroom. He combines a keen understanding of the law with insight regarding the practical concerns that face the people and companies he represents.

Domestic and Family Law

Since entering private practice in 1978, Dick has always been involved in domestic relations and family law matters. He ably represents clients facing the difficult process of divorce or separation, and assists them with issues including child custody, property settlement agreements, and spousal support and maintenance. Dick is an approved mediator in this area as well. He is frequently called upon to assist opposing parties in reaching a fair resolution in a professional and efficient manner.

Municipal Law

Over the years, Dick’s practice has evolved to encompass all aspects of city planning, zoning, and law enforcement. He offers an impressive depth of knowledge and experience concerning land-use issues, municipal codes and ordinances, and related state statutes, both civil and criminal. Dick has negotiated numerous cell tower agreements, obtained financing for improvement districts, and worked out the details on various municipal franchise agreements. He currently serves as City Attorney for Osawatomie, Kansas, and was the Leawood, Kansas City Attorney for many years before that.
