Implementing Voluntary Compliance Programs

Physicians should develop and maintain a voluntary compliance program to minimize the potential for erroneous or fraudulent conduct under federal health care requirements. The Office of the Inspector General (“OIG”), in the Department of Health and Human Services, issued a Compliance Program Guidance (“CPG”) for Individual and Small Group Physician Practices that, in essence, contains seven components that provide a solid basis upon which an individual or small physician practice group can create a program to prevent submission of erroneous claims and fraudulent conduct.
